FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Do I have to spend a lot on kit?
You can, but you don’t have to. The three main priorities with all clothing is: stay dry, stay warm and be comfortable. The more technical and therefore more expensive the material, then the drier you will be because it will let all the sweat out without letting the rain in. But if you are only going out occasionally and if it does rain you just need to stay dry till you get back to the car, then you don’t need the most high-tech fabric. The art of staying warm is to firstly stay dry, and it is also to layer up. Thermal base layer if needed, then an insulating mid layer like a fleece, then the water/wind proof layer i.e. you jacket. The same rules of high-tech fabrics apply here too. The one big thing is, make sure you get material which won’t get wet and hold the water like denim. A wet pair of jeans will suck the heat from you. A cheap pair of walking trousers and over trousers is a must over denim or the like. Boots need to be comfortable, support your ankle and as waterproof as your budget will allow. Better to spend a bit less on base layers, fleece and trousers, and spend more on boots. And look after them, clean and treat them to get the best out of them
How fit do I have to be?
We are going to spend some time walking up hills, sometimes rather steep ones, so a reasonable level of fitness is needed. All our walks have distance and total ascent to help you make that judgement. But it isn’t a race, we are not in a rush and our timings allow for us taking our time, enjoy the views, hear about the area, and appreciate the surrounding nature.
What about the toilet?
There often isn’t a toilet on our walks, we use the ‘loo with a view’. However we would strongly encourage you to do your 'number 2' before you start, because you don’t want to be carrying it back with you in a bag. Otherwise find a rock, tree or wall to hide behind.
Do you ever get lost?
Have we ever been lost on the hills? Yes, anyone who says otherwise probably isn’t telling the truth. However, we endeavour to always do the walks before we take groups on them, our guides are trained and skilled in navigation, even at night in a storm, and we always have a backup plan.
Will there be any scrambling?
For those who don’t know, scrambling is when you are making your way uphill and have to use your hands to help you up. It isn’t climbing, nor does it involve ropes, it might be using your hands to help pull yourself up a big step. We will always tell you in the walk descriptions if there is some scrambling and to be honest, it is rather fun.
What food should I bring?
We love snacking and you will often find us dipping into our back of chocolate squares and dried fruit and would suggest you bring some easy to nibble on snacks, note, crisps get soggy very quickly in the rain. For lunch you want something which can handle being squashed into a rucksack. We love cold pizza, a pie, wrap and even soup in a flask. Lots of energy and tasty food is most important. Again, think about how it will cope in wet weather. Also don’t forget something to drink, at least 2 litres, some people love a small flask of tea of coffee.
What is the one essential
piece of kit to bring?
Assuming you have the footwear, waterproofs etc, the Mountain Rescue Association recently said that the one piece of kit they wished every walker had, was a functioning bright head-torch.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Minors
The mountains are an awesome family day out!
We ask children under the age of 18 to be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian who will take full responsibility for their supervision and safeguarding at all times.
Children under the age of 13 will only be accepted by prior agreement on group walks.
Dogs
We love dogs, but other than Assistance Dogs, Adventure Unlocked does not normally accept dogs on its group walks (unless all participants are from the same booking and in agreement).
